Description:
A.A. Weinman designed this coin, often referred to as the "Walker," because of its depiction of Lady Liberty walking toward a new day. The obverse side of this coin features the portrait of Liberty where the coin gets its nickname: she is walking toward the sunrise of a new day and wearing the American Flag. Her arm is raised in "bestowal of the spirit of liberty," according to Treasury Secretary McAdoo in his 1916 annual report. Liberty is also carrying laurel and oak branches which McAdoo claims symbolizes civil and military glory. She is surrounded by the texts "LIBERTY" and In God We Trust." The eagle on the reverse side represents bower and fearlessness as a representation of America.
Both of these images show a strong patriotic spirit which resonated perfectly across the nation during this coin's production. This coin was produced from 1916 to 1947, encompassing both World Wars, the Great Depression, and the New Deal. The emphasis on America's power in this coin was very intentional on behalf of the Treasury and important in the minds of the American people.
