In 1828 the reduced size Capped Bust dime was introduced, the same year Andrew Jackson became president. New minting technology allowed for the diameter of this coin to be reduced from previous designs. The Chief Engraver, William Kneass, used the same eagle from the larger coins, which had been designed by John Reich. The dime was minted for a total of nine years and was discontinued when the United States economy declined, shortly after the financial Panic of 1837.
