Description:
Approximately 10 million visitors strolled the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition’s 285 acres and saw exhibits in more than 200 buildings. The Exhibition of 1876 offered everything from historical and technological exhibits to food. Many new inventions were exhibited there for the first time: Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's new ideas, typewriters, sewing machines, and even Heinz 57 Tomato Ketchup. The arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty were on display as part of an effort to raise money for the base of the permanent statue.
This token would have been purchased as a souvenir for a visitor to remember this historic event. Almost every state and over 30 countries participated in the Exposition, and approximately 20% of the American public attended.
