Description:
This is a political campaign mechanical from the 1896 political election between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. Throughout the campaign, the political opponents debated about the currency issue within the United States. McKinley supported the gold currency and Bryan supported free silver. This medal satirizes Bryan's stance on silver. This mechanical medallion switches images and text if you move the handle. On the front of the medallion is the phrase "I'm alright..Pat-app-d for" with an eagle that has both wings up. When the handle is moved, the phrase "Where am I At?" appears and the eagle switches position with the head and right wing down. On the reverse side of the medallion is the text "Sound Money Means a Dollar with 100 cents...McKinley, Hogan for Prosperity. When the handle is moved, the text "Free Silver Means a Dollar worth 50 cents...Bryan, Sewall, and Adversity."
