Description:
This is a German gambling token made to imitate a gold coin. The inscription has two meanings: "Compos" isn't actually a German word, but is short for composition. The inclusion of this word refers to the base-metal alloy of the coin and warns that there isn't actually any gold in the token. "Spiel-Munze" translates to "play-coin" or "play-money" which was used to indicate that this token was used in card games, similar to poker chips. The American iconography suggests that these tokens were made and used by German-American immigrant communities.Antebellum
