Description:
This is a pin commemorating the Minnesota 13th Volunteer Infantry for their services in the Spanish-American War. In 1898 President McKinley called for volunteers from each state of the Union to fight in the Spanish-American War. The 13th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry set out to the Philippines to fight the Spanish and fought under General Arthur MacArthur at Manila. When they returned home they were met in St. Paul by family members, friends, and other people. President McKinley also greeted the soldiers to thank them for their services. On the front of the pin it says "13th Reg. Minn." across the top. There are three people on the pin. The middle person is President McKinley, the man on the right is Mayor Gray, and the man on the left is Gov. Lind. The three pictures are separated by two american flags. The lower scene in the shield is a farmer working in the fields and an Indian on horseback. The words across the scene are "L'etoile du nord" translated from French to mean The Star of the North. This is the motto of Minnesota which was adopted in 1861. Across the bottom of the pin it says "Welcome Home."
