Description:
This is a commemorative medal that was issued for the 100th anniversary of the ship the Restauration that brought the first Norwegian immigrants to the United States. In 1925, Minnesota Congressman Ole Juulson Kvale wanted a commemorative for the centennial celebrations so he issued the medal which was supposed to recognize the immigrants' Viking heritage. On the obverse (front) of the coin a Norwegian chieftain is standing of land armed for battle. He is wearing a horned helmet, shield, sword, and svard (dagger). The scene is the Vikings landing at Vinland, which were the lands that they settled in 1000 AD. The centennial and years are recognized on the front as well. On the reverse (back) there is a Viking ship on water with the words "Authorized by Congress of the United States of America, A.D. 1000" around the picture.
