Description:
Before the American Revolutionary War, the United States was made up of independent colonies. Colonial money changed over time: originally the colonies used pounds, shillings, and pence like they would in Great Britain. Over time, however, the individual colonies began to issue their own paper money. This system was not viable in the long term, however, as the value of coins and notes would vary from one colony to another. This $2 bill is dated 1776 and was used in New York, which, along with the other colonies, became an independent state during the Revolutionary War.
