Description:
The Confederate States of America (CSA) existed from around 1861-1866, and each state issued their own defense bonds to help raise money for the war between them and the Federalists in the North.
Governor Claiborne F. Jackson declared secession on October 31st 1861 and authorized the production and circulation of defense bonds, such as the one pictured here. This note features the head of Jefferson Davis, with Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, on the left of him and the State Bear Shield on the right. The majority of defense bonds were not signed due to the fact that Governor Jackson's government was in exile. The Confederate Missouri State guard (MSG) gave these bonds to soldiers, who would be able to turn them in after three years for pay. The MSG, however, was short lived and many members chose to join with the formal Confederate army.
